Hi. I've recently joined to UO Renaissance since I get interested in UO again. I've been playing UO for some time so I know some basic mechanics etc. but here I feel little bit lost, overwhelmed.
I read few guides here about starting tips, how to make money, etc. but I still don't get few things. E.g. why should I spend about 4k+ on skills to get 700 cap?
And also is it really neccessary to spend a time with creating provo bard since it is stated that it's best way how to start? How about other templates ? I mean ok, it's fine if it's the easiest way but does it mean that every new player here have to create provo bard otherwise he will get eventually stuck since his character will be useless because he don't have enough money for training, useless in combat due to strong creatures etc.?
Let's say that I want to pick the way of combat, instead of afk macroing most of my skills/stats. Is it possible? (ofc. it is but my point is if it's relatively doable or is it just waste of time because I can't face most of creatures because I am too weak etc.)
You know I don't like when I am basicaly "forced" to pick "that right way", otherwise I will spend with my own choice hours and hours without any bigger results.
Right now I feel relatively confused since I'm not sure where should I start, since I don't feel very comfortable with following these guides. (No offense, I think these guides are pretty well written, but I don't see any other ways how to achieve similar results).
Hopefully you get what I'm trying to say here. Thanks.

    Welcome!

Spending 4000 gold to get to the skill cap is really just for established people looking to quickly max out their stats. I've been here for months, and I still just macro herding on all of my new chars. Let it run overnight and your STR & DEX are usually in pretty good shape after that. If I still need INT, I pick up Spirit Speak. If I still need DEX, I start Snooping. Really easy and free.

You don't need a provo bard at all. It's just one of the easiest ways to get going, so many people recommend it. If it's not for you, no problem! There are many other templates that will do just fine. Peacemaking dexxers are fairly popular. Not sure how familiar you are with them, but you basically keep monsters stunned while you pummel them to death. Tamers are of course also very popular here and are usually identified as the 'big game hunters'. Pure mages can work, but their summons are quickly dispelled against magic casting monsters, so keep that in mind. Pure dexxers can mow through lesser monsters with ease and can even take on bigger game with the right equipment.

You can definitely play without macroing. Many people find it more rewarding in the end, and I bet they are right. There is a group of players that sometimes play characters explicitly for this purpose here, they call themselves 'Naturalists'. You might try hooking up with them. They have a thread somewhere around, I'll try to find it.

    Thanks guys.
I guess I will have to spend little bit more time with these guides, since it's been a long time ago since I played UO, and yeah, I wasn't really fan of macroing aswell.
I also checked these "naturalists" and it seems quite interesting, and also nothing really new to me, since I've been playing on RP shard where were most of these things normal (nah, where are these times when I was enjoying game really really much and I don't even need razor or any other program. I guess RP itself was so amazing that I wasn't actually really cared about progressing with my character... :) Well, community is always most imporant thing in game.)
Anyway, thanks for your response. Let's see where I will get after about week. :)

    Welcome to the shard, Greeper.

While I often recommend the training methods you've read about, I myself trained my first characters by just hunting around graveyards and out in the woods. Many players don't have the patience for that but it is much more satisfying in the long-run. The great thing about UO is that you can do things in any manner you want.

I do recommend that you check out our IRC channel. It's a great resource to meet other players or just get your questions answered. Also, if you're interested in RP I suggest you contact Jupiter in the Village of Paws, Jebidiah from the Sosarian Post Office or myself in Stormhold.
