Would I be better off just buying a house here, or actually buying a deed and trying to place? I have a little over 300k saved up and am hoping eventually I can place a tower. Is that unrealistic here?
Damn, ok. I have about 300 saved up. Guess I need about double that to get a large or a tower from the looks of things on here, hehe.
It's possible (large tower) and happens often enough to make it a "noteworthy achievement". Set it as a goal and it'll happen. Place it yourself and you'll (probably) enjoy it more.
Someone got lucky and placed a keep the other day (don't count on that). Tower placements happen fairly regularly.
I would advise to try to place first. Buy your deed (its blessed) leave everything and I mean everything at the bank. Take a look at the compendium map here and go a wandering. So you get killed so what, you have nothing on you but the deed right? Find a wandering healer, get your new fashion robe and keep looking. You may get lucky and it may actually be fun since you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Good luck
... oh, don't neglect spots that a tower will fit on were an existing house or two purchased/dropped/adjusted.

My bad, i meant the interactive map but... if you do look at the compendium at the UOR home page, under housing, you can see the dimensions of every structure you can place. It may be helpful too.
